June 30, 2012 - SS United States 60th Anniversary Coverage

On June 15, the Conservancy held a festive 60th Anniversary event at Philadelphia's Independence Seaport Museum. After a wonderful patio reception, guests gathered to hear updates from the Conservancy's leadership and applaud as special awards were presented to two of the Conservancy's most committed donors and volunteers: Dean Edmonds and Marie Prewett. The evening's highlight was the presentation of the National Flagship Champion Medal to legendary NFL Coach Dick Vermeil and his rousing call to action on behalf of the SS United States. This was followed by a special screening of the new documentary film, SS United States: Made in America.  After the event, the Conservancy illuminated the SS United States' funnels, a gorgeous spectacle covered by almost all of Philadelphia's major television outlets.SS United States Celebrates 60th Anniversary, Fox 29, by Lauren Cohn, June 30, 2012Documentary Film About SS United States Conjures Up Memories, CBS

Having coached two NFC Championship football teams (the Philadelphia Eagles and the St. Louis Rams, the latter also winning the Super Bowl), Dick Vermeil knows a thing or two about winners. Having seen the ship many times in her current state but well aware of her history and her indomitable spirit, Vermeil donated his time to the Conservancy to star in a Public Service announcement highlighting the importance of saving this ship for future generations. The Conservancy hopes to initially air the spots in New York, Philadelphia, and St. Louis. You can watch the spot on YouTube.Media outlets around the country reported on Vermeil's support for the Conservancy, from the Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press, ABC 17 News, New Jersey Herald, and dozens of other outlets nationwide. For the Philadelphia Daily News's coverage of Coach Vermeil's new public service announcement, visit the link HERE.
