Maiden Voyage Reflections: Jean M Thomas

My father, Alfred H Bluhm, was the Chief Printer aboard the SS United States from her maiden voyage until 1964.

Like many other crew members, Bluhm had worked on other United States Lines’ ships before taking his position aboard the SS United States. He was the Chief Printer aboard the SS America, and before that aboard the SS Manhattan.

While I never had the opportunity to go aboard the SS America, I spent many happy hours with my mother on the SS United States, visiting my father in the Print Shop while America’s Flagship was berthed in New York City. Often, we would see the SS America berthed right alongside.

I remember the SS United States very well. She was a beautiful ocean liner with a wonderful, storied history. As many know, she won the Blue Riband on her maiden voyage. She also played host to many important and famous people who traveled on her, including legendary comedian Bob Hope, and dignitaries, like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

My father worked with a wonderful man by the nickname of “Frenchie". Regrettably, after all these years, I cannot recall what "Frenchie's" real name was, but I do remember that he was a Canadian.

Over the years, I lost track of the SS United States, until I found out that she was docked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I was thrilled, and my family and I made a trip to Philadelphia to see her. I was completely awed at the sight, and I cried when I finally laid eyes upon her again! So many memories flooded my thoughts. I had told my family about the many stories of my experiences aboard her, and all about my father. I even showed them some pictures of my father in his uniform (see above).

I am thrilled to know that the SS United States Conservancy is trying to save this beautiful ship and keep her afloat. I applaud Susan Gibbs and her organization for their tireless efforts on behalf of this national icon.

The SS United States was and still is a great symbol of our country! We must help save the SS United States by donating to the SS United States Conservancy, so that she will not suffer the same tragic fate of the SS America.
