Welcome to David Macaulay!
Dear SS United States Conservancy friends and supporters,
I am delighted to announce that eminent author and artist David Macaulay has joined the Conservancy’s advisory council and has pledged his support for our urgent SOS Campaign to save and repurpose the SS United States. Mr. Macaulay, who immigrated to this country on board the ship at the age of ten, will be advising the Conservancy on the development of the SS United States Center for Design and Discovery. He has also kindly consented to share his perspectives on the ship’s meaning and importance while working on his latest book: a history of technology centered on the design and construction of the SS United States. His book, with the working title of Ingenuity: A Journey will be published in 2015 by David Macaulay Studio, an imprint of Roaring Brook.
David Macaulay is an award-winning author and illustrator whose books have sold millions of copies in the United States alone, and his work has been translated into a dozen languages. Since the publication of his first book, Cathedral, Macaulay has inspired children and adults alike with his love for history and fascination with how things work. His meticulously illustrated pages, facts and figures liberally seasoned with humor, trace the history of the human desire to create and innovate. His work has won him numerous awards—including a MacArthur Fellowship, a Caldecott Medal, an American Institute of Architects Medal, the Washington Children’s Book Guild Nonfiction Award, and the Deustcher Jugendliteraturpreis, to name a few—in multiple countries.
As Mr. Macaulay’s work on his latest project progresses, he will be sharing his thoughts on our new blog, David Macaulay’s Journey Aboard the SS United States. Having drawn inspiration from the SS United States, he and the Conservancy hope to inspire others with this story to go forth and create in their own right.
