On February 20th, we will be hosting a special screening of the short film “Colossus on the River,” which shows the SS United States returning to her berth at Pier 86 on the Hudson. To view a trailer for the re-release, click here.
The catered screening will be held at the Metrograph in New York City, and will include commentary by Conservancy Board President Charles Anderson (son of United States Lines Commodore John Anderson) and a question and answer session with the film’s director, Manfred “Manny” Kirchheimer. Kirchheimer, who has been hailed as one of the best documentary filmmakers, will be the subject of a MoMA retrospective in early February. He describes “Colossus on the River,” which was filmed in 1963, as “an ode to a once-familiar ritual on the New York waterfront: the passage and docking of a transcontinental ocean liner.”
Seating for this screening has now sold out! Those interested in attending who have not yet purchased tickets are encouraged to send an email to be added to the waitlist.
Thank you to Skuld, a world-leading marine insurance provider, and to Moran, a towing company launched in New York Harbor that grew to preeminence in the industry, for their generous co-sponsorship of this event!
You’re invited to celebrate the storied history of the SS United States at Traditions Brewing, a craft brewery in Newport News, Virginia, where the Big U’s story began over sixty years ago. One of Tradition Brewing’s signature beers, Hull 488, honors the enduring connection between SS United States and Newport News, where her hull (number 488) was laid.
Join us on February 25th to celebrate the maiden voyage of Hull 488 in 12-ounce cans. All proceeds from the sale of Hull 488 as well as from the silent auction will go toward securing a fittingly bright future for our iconic flagship.
